The Vickery Collections
Almost all of my subjects are trapped in mazes, bars of light, shadow prisons, multiple-window reflections, split images in ferryboat windows, spangles cast by faraway leaves, cobblestone entrapments-all refracted facets of the physical world. Working the way I do, I can break up forms and create new combinations at will. This is a good way for a realist to indulge in some of the pleasures of abstraction. It’s also great fun to paint what I like to paint.

A documentary of the American artist’s life and work
Described by John Canaday, art critic of the New York Times, as “the world’s most proficient craftsman in egg tempera”, Robert Vickrey is observed creating several of his Magic Realist paintings. “Most painters are intimidated by the demands of the Renaissance technique”, says Vickrey while demonstrating that it can be mastered with practical ease.
